Kushare is a digital food-sharing platform operated by FoodSharing Kenya to make it easier for surplus food to reach people and communities who can use it.
Kushare connects three main groups:
Food Donors — individuals, businesses, farms, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, institutions, events and other organisations with safe surplus food to share.
Food Savers — individuals or organisations that help collect, transport, coordinate or facilitate the redistribution of available food.
Food Seekers/Recipients — individuals, families, community groups, schools, organisations and other eligible users seeking available food.
Kushare exists to help reduce avoidable food waste, improve access to food and encourage a culture of sharing.
Kushare is a food-sharing platform, not a marketplace for buying and selling donated food.
By accessing Kushare, creating an account, posting food, requesting food, responding to a listing, collecting food or otherwise using the platform, you agree to comply with these Terms and all applicable Kushare policies.
If you do not agree with these Terms, you should not use Kushare.
Users are responsible for reading and understanding the policies that apply to their activities on the platform.
All Kushare users are expected to uphold the following principles:
Only offer food that you reasonably believe is suitable for human consumption.
Provide accurate information about food, quantity, condition, location and collection arrangements.
Treat donors, Food Savers, recipients, volunteers and other users with dignity and respect.
Take reasonable steps to protect food safety and personal safety during collection, transportation, handover and consumption.
People seeking food must never be humiliated, exploited, discriminated against or publicly exposed because they need food.
The purpose of Kushare is to keep safe surplus food in circulation and reduce unnecessary food waste.
Food Donors are responsible for providing truthful and useful information when posting food.
A food listing should, where applicable, include:
Type of food.
Quantity available.
Date and time available.
Collection location.
Date prepared or packaged, where known.
Best-before or use-by information, where applicable.
Storage requirements.
Known allergens or important ingredients.
Whether the food is cooked, raw, opened, packaged or processed.
Any other information that could reasonably affect safe handling or consumption.
Spoiled or contaminated food.
Food that has been exposed to unsafe conditions.
Food with damaged packaging that compromises its safety.
Food containing undisclosed known hazards.
Food that the donor knows or reasonably suspects is unsafe for human consumption.
Food intended for disposal because it is unsafe.
A donor must remove or update a listing when the food is no longer available.
Food safety is a shared responsibility.
Kushare does not encourage users to share food merely because it would otherwise be wasted. Food should only be shared where it is reasonably considered suitable for human consumption.
Users involved in food sharing must take reasonable care regarding:
Hygiene.
Temperature control.
Storage.
Packaging.
Transportation.
Cross-contamination.
Allergens.
Preparation and handling.
Recipients should inspect food before accepting or consuming it and should exercise their own judgement regarding whether food is suitable for consumption.
FoodSharing Kenya may remove any listing where there is a reasonable concern about food safety.
Food Savers play an important role in helping safe surplus food move from donors to recipients.
Food Savers must:
Collect food as agreed.
Handle food responsibly and hygienically.
Avoid unnecessary delays.
Follow donor instructions relating to collection and handling.
Avoid opening, tampering with or altering food unnecessarily.
Keep food secure during transportation.
Deliver food to the agreed recipient or destination.
Report problems affecting food safety or collection.
Respect the dignity and privacy of recipients.
Food Savers must not:
Take food for unauthorised personal use.
Resell donated food without authorisation.
Falsify collection records.
Claim food that they did not collect.
Divert food intended for vulnerable individuals or communities.
Use their role to exploit donors, recipients or other users.
Kushare is intended to help people and organisations access available surplus food in a safe and dignified manner.

Provide accurate information where required.
Respect collection arrangements.
Collect food at the agreed time where reasonably possible.
Inform the relevant person if they can no longer collect food.
Treat donors, Food Savers and other users respectfully.
Report concerns regarding food safety or inappropriate conduct.
Users must not deliberately make false claims in order to obtain food.
Food received through Kushare must not be systematically collected for unauthorised resale.
Kushare is designed primarily for sharing surplus food, not commercial resale.
A user must not collect free food through Kushare and systematically resell it for profit without the express permission of the relevant donor and/or FoodSharing Kenya.
FoodSharing Kenya may suspend or terminate accounts involved in the unauthorised commercial exploitation of donated food.
Users should use safe and appropriate arrangements when meeting to exchange food.
Where possible:
Use agreed public or recognised collection locations.
Avoid unnecessarily sharing personal information.
Do not enter private premises unless appropriate and authorised.
Follow agreed collection instructions.
Report suspicious or unsafe behaviour.
FoodSharing Kenya may recommend alternative collection arrangements or suspend a transaction where there is a reasonable safety, safeguarding, fraud or operational concern.
Kushare serves people from different backgrounds and circumstances.
Users must not discriminate against, harass, threaten, intimidate or humiliate another person based on characteristics protected by applicable law or because they are seeking food.
In particular, users must not photograph, film or publicly identify people receiving food without appropriate permission.
Needing food is not a reason to lose one's dignity or privacy.
Where Kushare activities involve children or other vulnerable persons, users must exercise additional care.
Users must not:
Exploit children or vulnerable persons.
Request inappropriate personal information from children.
Photograph or publish identifiable images of children without appropriate consent.
Use access to food as a means of gaining inappropriate access to children or vulnerable persons.
