Millions of Kenyans face hunger and food insecurity every day. In 2024, over 15 million people were severely food insecure — unable to access enough nutritious meals regularly. Families in urban informal settlements like Korogocho are especially vulnerable, struggling with poverty, unemployment, and rising food prices.
Children under five and pregnant or nursing mothers suffer most, with many at risk of malnutrition due to limited access to diverse, healthy foods. Poor nutrition affects growth, health, and future opportunities.
At the same time, Kenya loses 30–40% of its food to waste every year due to poor storage, transport, and handling. Meanwhile, many households lack proper food education, leading to unhealthy diets and more malnutrition.
This means that while millions go hungry, tons of food go to waste — a critical problem we must solve.
Foodsharing Kenya is here to bridge this gap by rescuing surplus food and redirecting it to families in need, while educating communities about nutrition and reducing food waste. Together, we can fight hunger and build healthier, more resilient communities.
Foodsharing Kenya is a community-driven, non-profit initiative dedicated to fighting hunger and food waste across Kenya. Building on years of experience working with vulnerable families in Korogocho through Empowered Dreams Initiative, we are now expanding to reach more communities in need.
We do this by:
Rescuing surplus food from donors such as businesses, markets, and households to prevent waste.
Distributing nutritious meals to vulnerable children, pregnant women, and families through mobile pantries and community feeding programs.
Promoting nutrition education to help families make healthier food choices and improve child feeding practices.
Supporting urban farming and livelihoods to empower communities to grow their own food and build resilience.
Collaborating with local health centers to strengthen nutrition services and outreach.
Since 2023, Foodsharing Kenya has helped thousands of families especially in Korogocho slums access safe, nutritious food while reducing food waste. With the support of volunteers and partners, we are committed to scaling our impact and ensuring that no Kenyan goes hungry.
